Twitter – SEO – Part Two

I was dead excited in my previous post in regards to twitter, twitter is everywhere at the moment and is all over radio, television and the news. I saw vast growth in people viewing my site when I added the twitter functionality to my site and commented regularly in regards to my site.
Now with the honeymoon period over, what do I think?
I have stopped marketing my site as forcefully as I was using this service; I was before just spamming twitter so to speak with my URL...but no more. I am going to use twitter to tweet what is on my mind. After the first few days of twitter bringing in record hits to my site my stats began to suffer and hence my decision for time to change.
Bang. There I was coming up to 100 hits when I first released my site within days I was hopeful this site may take off...but I dug in to my stats and realised a few home truths.
- Although hits were up and making site seem popular it was not working in long run
- Returning Visitors were down meaning people came on the site left and do not appear to be coming back
- Time users spent on site was down on average
This is why I therefore have stopped advertising my site on twitter, these things were not looking good for the direction of the site. I have since focused on SEO of code and site setup as well as a lot more tactful advertising rather than 'spamming' twitter. Recently I have been averaging out a lot better and the time users spend on site are up showing meaning the content is now being viewed rather than clicked through to and leaving.
Love twitter and great for getting things out there, but be tactful with this and tweet about a mixture of personal/areas of interest and a small part of advertising. This is because the more people will find you interesting and will follow your tweets. You then have more followers and will receive more hits from less advertisement and these people if they follow your microblogs will probably enjoy your real blog/site.
I have however received feedback from a friend of mine and a reader of my blogs in regards to a successfully advertisement spree which probably quadrupled his hits in a day, check out his site at www.root.cd and his twitter account here. I will catch up with him in a few weeks a see if he is still successful or came to same theory as me in regards to twitter advertisement.
