Jailbreaking the iPhone

Hi guys. Today's blog is the first of its kinda and will start a new category being 'Tutorials'. This may well be the first and the last only time will tell. I hope you enjoy.
This article will contain the following:
- Create a backup of your iPhone
- Prepare iPhone
- Jailbreak iPhone
I hope you enjoy the article and any feedback will be appreciated.
First is to create a back up encase this all goes tits up (please note I will not cover restoring your iPhone, but google can help with that). Here are the steps for backing up your iPhone:
- Plug iPhone in to PC via USB
- Open up iTunes
- Right click on your device name e.g. Wayne's iPhone
- Select Backup
- Ensure you know where the back up is
Now if anything goes wrong when jail-breaking your iPhone you can restore the details. However jail-breaking is simple and should not go wrong. Now for the jail-breaking of the phone:
- Ensure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and latest version of the iPhone software on the phone, you will also require the latest version of .net framework on your PC for the jail-breaking application to run correctly.
- Latest version of iTunes
- Latest version of .NET framework
- Latest iPhone software (Make sure the iPhone software is updated on phone and the file is saved in a safe place for a step later on.)
- Now to download the hacking software which is called quickpwn (select the one for iPhone 3g v2.2.1)
You now have all the required set up to begin the jail-breaking of your iPhone. Please ensure your iPhone is connected to USB before starting.
- Run the quickpwn software
- Follow the on screen steps.
You will first be asked to ensure your iPhone is plugged in and ready to begin the process. Select the arrow when ready for next stage.
On the next screen you will be asked to select your iPhone firmware version (that's the file you downloaded earlier and I told you to ensure you know where its saved). Once you have selected the firmware and the software verifies this progress to the next screen.
On this screen quickpwn will ask you what you would like to install. I chose 'Cydia' and 'Installer'. You however can choose what you want. You will however require the 'Cydia' application to do anything cool with your jail-broken iPhone.
At this point you will be asked again to ensure iPhone is plugged in to the PC via USB as we are now almost ready to jailbreak the device.
Now the process of jail-breaking you iPhone will begin. Just follow the on screen steps (the screen does the counting for you).
If you have got the combination of holding buttons correct in previous stage, your iPhone will now begin jail-breaking and you can follow the process with the status bar. On completion of this you will be informed the jail-breaking of iPhone is complete. After reboot you will have Cydia on your phone and the installer if you opted for this option.
Let me know how it went in the comments below. Please note we are not responsible for any issues caused by tutorial. Also this may void your warranty, but you will fall back in love with your iPhone.
In the time of writing this article I have decided there will be more articles like this. There will be a further two articles about useful applications and few other things. Hope you enjoy.

Hi Wayne,
I am currently experience something that no one is able to fix here in South Africa!
I bought the iphone in Dubai and when i got back home to South Africa it was working fine on the network. But after i tried several times to download certain applications it said that i needed the 2.0 software first.
I went onto my itunes, plugged my iphone in and updated it but when it was in the final step it said that the simcard is not recognized and i needed to put in a valid simcard or go back to the carrier where i bought the phone!
My problem is that i cant do anything with it now, like it is locked and it is said that the software that i updated isnt compatible with our network, so….
Can you please help me to tell me how to restore my iphone to the previous step and older version, the one that came with the iphone when i bought it!
Thanks

With iTunes 8.2 and QuickPwn 2.2.1, the iphone fails to be recognized. Just thought it was worth mentioning to anyone who is thinking of jailbreaking but has an up to date iTunes.
Thanks for the feedback. I will update this as soon as possible and mention the updated versions below. Did you manage to jailbreak ya iPhone?
