iPhone OS 3.0 and Jailbreaking

Its that time....I have eagerly sat waiting to do this and well in hope of an article about upgrading to OS 3.0 when your iPhone has been jailbroken so I can make sure I do this problem free.

However I have not yet had such the luck. So I have done it. Dived in at the deep end and wrote this as I did it. So all you guys in same position as myself can happily get the new features of OS 3.0 and then add your jailbroken applications.

Remember to make a back up of your iPhone. Also please note all previous applications will be removed.

First up is to if you have not already done so you will be required to upgrade your iTunes to the latest version. This is simple to do.

1. Open up iTunes
2. Select your iPod/iPhone from the sidebar menu
3. Press the Upgrade button
4. You will then be asked to upgrade iTunes if you need to. If you don't skip straight to the installing OS 3.0 section

The download and install is quite long and boring to wait for. So get a cup of coffee..or well anything you want. The screen you get bored of staring at looks like

Once this download has completed you will be prompted to restart your PC. I will recommend for article sake you do this as it may cause issues later (however I did not restart PC- was busy doing other things).

Once restarted go back to the upgrade option and it will alert you about installing OS 3.0.

1. Select Download & Install
2. Press Next on the important information page
3. The file will then begin to download. You can monitor the download from the download section in your iTunes

Once the download is complete your iPhone will restart and new drivers be installed on PC. On restart thee iPhone will sit on the boot screen with a load/install bar for around 10/15 minutes. Once the install has done you will receive the following screen on your PC.

You now have OS 3.0 - HOWEVER ALL APPLICATIONS AND SOFTWARE INSTALLED ON YOUR JAILBREAK HAVE NOW BEEN DELETED.

Part 2 - Re-Jailbreaking

Now to jailbreak again. It sucks. We have to re-jailbreak and re-install our applications. If you want a list of recomended applications please check out my list of the best jailbroken iPhone applications. Last time we used QuickPwn but this time I have gone with Pwnage.

N.B. This article if for Windows users not Mac Users. Also this does not work on iPhone 3GS.

1. Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage (This makes the hack simpler)
2. Download the Pwnage tool and unzip the content to your Pwnage folder on your desktop. Download Here.
3. Download the OS 3.0 framework for the hack. You can get the framework here
4. Run the Redsn0w.exe and select the framework on the first page from the broswe button and press next
5. On the next screen select to install Cydia
6. On the next screen you will be asked to ensure your iPhone is plugged in to your PC and turned off
7. You will then be asked to do the following:
   • Hold down the power button for 2 seconds
   • Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds
   • Hold down Home button for 30 seconds
8. Once this has done multiple error messages will appear on your itunes ignore this
9. You can follow process of jailbreak on the iPhone screen

You are now done. Please go ahead and re-install your applications or use the ones I have suggested here.
